Points for Boston Bruins
Yorker News - Instead, the Bruins had to settle for one point as the Penguins leaned heavily on their two-headed monster of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to come away with a 3-2 overtime victory.

Crosby had a goal and two assists while Malkin had a pair of goals, including the game-winner just 32 seconds into the extra session.

If you'd told the undermanned Bruins before the game that they would come away with a point, they might have taken it. But not after the way they were able to play.

"I think we had enough chances to win tonight, but their last play was a perfect pass, a perfect shot. It would have been nice, but it just wasn't our luck, I guess," Dennis Seidenberg, who was back on defense for Malkin's game-winner, said.

After the B's pressured briefly on the first shift of overtime, Crosby took off on a 3-on-2 after a Reilly Smith pass went off Brad Marchand's skate. Once in the offensive zone, Crosby made a wing-to-wing pass to Malkin, who snapped a shot between goalie Tuukka Rask's pads for the win.

Both teams had opportunities to win it in regulation. First, David Pastrnak, in his NHL debut, made a slick backhand pass in the slot to Marchand, but Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, who recorded his 300th win, got a stick on the puck and steered it just wide.

Late in regulation, Pittsburgh got the chance to put its top-ranked power play to work when the B's were called for too many men on the ice with 2:31 to play, but the penalty killers held strong.

Outshot 33-29, the Bruins also had two potential goals nullified. In the first period, trailing 1-0, Patrice Bergeron was awarded a goal but, after a video review officials ruled that Bergeron redirected the puck with his stick when it was over the crossbar.

The second one came in the second period with the game tied at 2. Off the rush, Loui Eriksson sent a pass to a crashing Milan Lucic. The puck bounced in the air and Carl Soderberg appeared to hit it with his glove. It may have deflected off someone else, but after the review it was disallowed because of Soderberg's swipe at the puck.

The two non-goals looked like the right calls — Soderberg conceded as much on his play. But with being victimized on many disallowed goals and quick whistles this season, the frustration is mounting for coach Claude Julien.

"When you've got to score two goals every night to get one, it's tough to win hockey games," Julien said. "We got some tough calls against us and our guys played hard right ‘til the end. Unfortunately, we didn't get that second point that I thought we deserved."

While they got back Marchand after he missed three games with an injury, the B's were still without David Krejci and Chris Kelly up front, as well as Zdeno Chara and Adam McQuaid on the back end.

Wakatobi flowerpecker New Bird Species Discovered in Indonesia
Yorker News - Wakatobi flowerpecker, a new bird species from Sulawesi belongs to Dicaeum, a genus in the flowerpecker family Dicaeidae confirmed 15 years after first observation.

Dicaeum flowerpeckers are small (10 to 18 cm long), often colorful birds.

Ding Li Yong, a PhD student at the Fenner School of Environment and Society at the Australian National University (ANU), helped to confirm the new species, known as the Sulawesi Streaked Flycatcher.

"The locals knew we were there for a biological expedition and so a hunter came to us with some dead birds," Yong said on Tuesday. "We obtained these specimens and one was this new species."

"We instantly knew that it couldn't be anything else."

Dicaeum flowerpeckers have short tails, short thick curved bills and tubular tongues.

During the months of July, August and September in various years between 1999 and 2012, Dr Nicola Marples of Trinity College and his colleagues sampled individuals of a previously recognized Dicaeum species – the Grey-sided flowerpecker (Dicaeum celebicum) – from seven sites across the Wakatobi archipelago, Buton Island and the south-eastern peninsula of Sulawesi. In total, 58 flowerpeckers were mist-netted and studied.

The combined results from genetic, phylogenetic and morphological analyses indicated that flowerpeckers from a small chain of islands known as the Wakatobi Islands are a new species, named the Wakatobi flowerpecker (Dicaeum kuehni).

The genetic data also revealed that the Grey-sided flowerpecker and the Wakatobi flowerpecker did not mix or interbreed, which in turn suggests that they do not cross the 27 km stretch of ocean between them.
Regin Has Been Infecting Computers Since 2008
Symantec researchers have identified a particularly sophisticated piece of malware, called "Regin" that was likely developed by a nation state and has been used to spy on governments, infrastructure operators, businesses, researchers and individuals since at least 2008.

"Regin displays a degree of technical competence rarely seen," Symantec said in a statement Sunday, released along with a technical white paper about the malware. Indications are that Regin "is one of the main cyberespionage tools used by a nation state."

Researchers have identified its use in 10 countries, mainly Russia and Saudi Arabia, as well as Mexico, Ireland, India, Afghanistan, Iran, Belgium, Austria and Pakistan.

Regin is a back-door-type Trojan, "customizable with an extensive range of capabilities depending on the target," Symantec said, adding that "it provides its controllers with a powerful framework for mass surveillance." Its development probably took months "if not years" and "its authors have gone to great lengths to cover its tracks."

Its first incarnation was used to spy on a number of organizations from 2008 to 2011 when it was "abruptly withdrawn," with a new version showing up last year, Symantec said.

Grand Jury Still at Work in Missouri
Yorker News - A grand jury in St. Louis County, Missouri, is expected to reconvene today, trying to decide whether to indict a white police officer in the August shooting death of an unarmed black teen.

The weekend was marked by protests in the city of Ferguson, with security tight and tensions running high ahead of the grand jury's decision. Many people were expecting the grand jury to come to a decision over the weekend.

Ferguson Grand Jury 'Unfair,' Michael Brown Family Lawyer Says

2 in Missouri Charged With Lying on Forms to Buy Guns Ahead of Grand Jury Decision

Grand Jury Keeps Ferguson on Edge

While the jurors debate possible criminal charges against officer Darren Wilson, additional law enforcement -- including the National Guard and more than 100 FBI agents -- was stationed in Ferguson ahead of the grand jury's decision.

The Saint Louis County Police Department switched its officers to 12-hour shifts in recent days. Metal and concrete barricades have been erected in areas around the St Louis County government buildings in Clayton, Missouri, where the grand jury has been meeting. The justice center there also houses the prosecutor's office, the St. Louis County Police Department headquarters and the circuit courts.

A handful of arrests were made during the weekend. Some stores in the St. Louis suburb remain closed, with business owners boarding up windows in fear.

"We look abandoned here, pretty much imprisoned," business owner Triondus Sleet said. "It's sad."

Wilson could be charged with murder or manslaughter -- or nothing -- for the Aug. 9 shooting death of Michael Brown. If cleared, a police union rep said he should be able to return to work.

"It would be my hope though that if, one day, he decides to stay in law enforcement, that he's able to do that," said Detective Gabe Crocker, president of the St. Louis County Police Association. "Especially if he's cleared, that means he didn't do anything wrong, according to the grand jury."

President Obama, in an exclusive interview with ABC News, urged for calm no matter what decision the grand jury reaches, a sentiment also expressed by Brown's mother and father.

"Using any event as an excuse for violence is contrary to rule of law and contrary to who we are," Obama said.

As Blu-ray players go, the original PS3 was competitively priced. With a slimmer profile, lower price and lower power consumption, the PlayStation 3 Slim (120GB) is arguably the one to beat. Factor in games, social networking features such as PlayStation Home, music and custom video playback, web surfing, and picture browsing, and this may be the best-value Sony game system yet.

It's hard not to be impressed by the Xbox 360. With its high-def output, beautiful wireless controllers and amazing graphical prowess, it's a gamer's dream. Take into account all the additional functionality (Media Center Extender, Xbox Live Arcade, built-in Breville sandwich toaster) and it's an absolute steal. You can either buy this now, or wait for Sony to come good on its promises for PS3. I know which I'd choose.
